Chief Leonard George Tour

Past Event: June 12, 2025

About

On Thursday, June 12, ZEBx hosted its third building tour of 2025 at the Chief Leonard George building site in Vancouver. This transformative redevelopment, led by the BC Indigenous Housing Society, will replace a former 27-unit structure with an 81-unit, 9-storey Passive House and Mass Timber building inspired by traditional cedar baskets. The new development will include a mix of unit sizes, a daycare, and a community garden, offering quality affordable housing for Indigenous families.

As they toured the development, guests heard from key project partners including the general contractor (Ventana), architect (GBL Architects), mechanical consultant (AME Group), and building science consultant (RDH). Presenters detailed the project’s sustainability goals, Indigenous design inspiration, and construction strategies. This project not only provides a striking visual reminder of the historic cultural practices of the Indigenous peoples who have called these lands home but also advances climate-friendly building practices and supports Vancouver’s sustainability goals. The event offered a meaningful look into how Indigenous-led housing projects are reshaping the urban landscape through innovation, culture, and community-focused design.
