West Coast Building Standard

Residential Construction Standards

Over the past five years, the Nuxalk Nation Housing Initiative has made significant strides in fostering local capacity, constructing durable, high-performance homes, and educating the community on their operation and maintenance. This initiative has focused on blending cutting-edge building science with the unique cultural and environmental needs of the Nuxalk Nation, setting a benchmark for Indigenous housing across the region.

A key outcome of this initiative is the West Coast Building Standard – Residential Construction Specifications, developed by Richard Hall in collaboration with RDH Building Science and David Wong of Sea to Sky Architecture + Urban Ecology, with support from BC Hydro, BC Housing, and the Province of BC. This guide integrates advanced building science, energy efficiency, and low embodied carbon practices into designs that align with the cultural lifestyles of West Coast communities.
